This summer looked a little different for me.
My wedding calendar was slower than some past summers, and honestly, I was grateful for the breathing room. I loved not having a wedding every single weekend, but that certainly didn’t mean I wasn’t working on my business!
Instead, this became a summer of growth.
I traveled throughout Virginia for networking events, joined new wedding communities, invested in education, and sat across the table from so many incredible people in the wedding industry. And somewhere along the way, I was reminded that sometimes the best thing you can do for your business is simply get in the room.
We live in a world where it’s incredibly easy to feel connected online.
We follow each other on Instagram, comment on beautiful work, send DMs, and keep up with one another’s businesses. And I genuinely love that social media has given us the ability to build relationships with people we may have never met otherwise.
But there is something completely different about sitting across the table from another business owner.
There is something special about having real conversations with people who understand what it’s like to build a business, serve clients well, navigate changes in the wedding industry, and continue growing through it all.
This summer reminded me just how important those relationships are.
In June, I joined the Charlottesville Wedding Society, and I’ve been so impressed by the community they’ve created.
My first event was at Birdwood Mansion at Boar’s Head Resort. Where I walked into a room not really knowing what to expect and walked out having made so many new connections.
It was also where I had the opportunity to meet Emily and James Hancock in person.

I had previously attended a few of their free online educational webinars, so getting to actually sit down and talk with them about business, growth, and where I was in my own business journey felt divinely timed.
That conversation eventually led me to join their Beyond the Budget Market group coaching program.
After more than a decade in business, one thing I’ve learned is that you can’t stop investing in your growth. The wedding industry changes. Marketing changes. Our clients change. And sometimes we need people outside of our own businesses to challenge us to look at things differently.
I’m so thankful I decided to say yes!

In July, I headed back to another Charlottesville Wedding Society event, this time for their European Garden Soirée at The Villa at Hazy Mountain Weddings.
It was another beautiful opportunity to spend time with fellow Virginia wedding professionals, reconnect with familiar faces, and continue building relationships beyond a quick Instagram interaction.
I also got to reconnect with Meg of Captivating Complexion, and we ended the evening with dinner together with one of my photographer friends, Katelyn Workman!
Those are the moments I’ve come to appreciate so much. What begins as meeting someone at an industry event can turn into dinner, genuine friendship, collaboration, and people you can cheer on within this industry.

August brought another opportunity to stretch myself when I attended A Tuscan Affair with the DMV Wedding Collective at Fleetwood Farm Winery in Leesburg, Virginia.
I went by myself, which meant I couldn’t fall back on staying beside someone I already knew. I had to introduce myself, start conversations, and make new friends. And I’m so glad I did!
We heard from a panel of talented DMV wedding vendors, including Terry Kaye Events, with Jasmine of Anyvent moderating the conversation. It was refreshing to hear honest perspectives from other professionals who understand what the wedding industry looks like right now.
I also met Chelsea Quenum, and we immediately had such a wonderful conversation. There was something about her that was just a light, and after connecting again on Instagram, we’re now planning to meet for lunch!
It’s such a simple example of why I’ve been making these events a priority. You never know who you’re going to sit beside or what friendship might begin because you decided to walk into the room.

Before my final networking event of the summer, I also had the chance to meet up with Katelyn Workman and Katie of Tilly and Teal for lunch at Pippin Hill.
It was another reminder that networking doesn’t always need to look like name tags and formal events. Sometimes it’s sitting around a table, sharing a meal, talking about things beyond the wedding industry, and genuinely getting to know the people behind the businesses you see online.
Those smaller conversations have been some of my favorite moments from this season.
At the end of August, I attended the WIPA Richmond Chapter’s first event at Early Mountain Vineyards, and oh my goodness, it was beautiful!
It felt like the perfect way to wrap up a summer that had been so focused on community.
I also met Phoebe Riegle of Riegle Events, and we ended up going to dinner afterward. We talked and talked until we were literally the last people in the restaurant!
I left that night thinking about how beautifully The Lord places the right people in our paths at the right time.
Some connections may eventually turn into collaborations or referrals, but that’s not what made this summer meaningful to me… It was the relationships themselves.

This summer taught me that growth doesn’t always look like a completely booked calendar. (Hello burnout!!)
Sometimes growth looks like investing in education. Sometimes it’s driving to Charlottesville or Leesburg without knowing exactly who you’ll meet when you get there. Sometimes it’s introducing yourself to someone new, staying for dinner, or saying yes to lunch. And sometimes it’s simply being willing to put yourself in the right rooms with people who understand where you’re going.
As I continue growing as an East Coast wedding photographer, I want to be surrounded by planners, designers, photographers, beauty professionals, and other wedding creatives who care deeply about serving their couples well. Because at the end of the day, this industry is about people.
And this summer reminded me just how grateful I am for the people The Lord continues to place in my path.
I can’t wait to see where these new friendships, opportunities, and lessons take me next!
